Description

For women not now using a contraceptive method and not intending to do so in the future, FPYNOTFUS (V376) reports the reason the woman doesn't intend to use family planning in the future.

When children are chosen as the unit of analysis, the woman respondent indicates the mother of the child.

Responses are grouped into the following broad categories, each with a different first digit: not married, other low fertility risk, wants children, opposition to use, lack of knowledge, method-related, and other. Specific responses within these categories are distinguished by the second digit of the codes.

Comparability

Along with changes in the universe and slight differences in question wording, the response categories in FPYNOTFUS (V376) vary across samples and changed over time.

As noted on the Description tab, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding to group responses into broad comparable categories: not married, other low fertility risk, wants children, opposition to use, lack of knowledge, method-related, and other. Consult the Codes tab for the range of responses for samples of interest.

Comparability - Standard DHS

FPYNOTFUS (V376) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase 2 through Phase 5. Response categories changed between phases, with more responses added to the variable starting in Phase 3.
