Description
For women who are not currently using a method of contraception and are at risk of pregnancy, FPYNOTHLTH (V3A08O) indicates whether they reported "health concerns" in response to an open-ended question about reasons for not using contraception.

In addition to differences in question wording, significant universe differences may affect the comparability of FPYNOTHLTH (V3A08O).
The meaning of at risk of pregnancy varies across samples. For most samples, women were considered to be at risk of pregnancy if they were not infecund, not sterilized, and not pregnant at the time of the interview. For a minority of samples, IPUMS-DHS also excludes women who have never had sex from the universe. In the original DHS data, these women were coded to the response category "never had sex" for FERTPREF, PREFTIMECH, PREFTIMECHGP, and KIDDESIRE. IPUMS-DHS used supplemental programming to exclude these cases of women who never had sex from the universe to make the data more consistent across variables and to ensure that the universes are empirically accurate. Countries of interest are noted below.
Though response category wording is consistent across samples in FPYNOTHLTH, there is a change between Phases V and VI that required the addition of a new variable. See the Standard DHS Comparability section below for more details.
Comparability - Standard DHS
FPYNOTHLTH (V3A08O) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phases IV and V. In addition question wording differences, wording for the response category varies across the phases.
Phases IV and V include "health concerns" as its own response category. In Phase VI, DHS Program combines the categories "health concerns" and "fear of side effects (FPYNOTSIDEF) into a single response (see FPYNOTSDHLTH). As a result, Phase VI samples are not included in FPYNOTHLTH but are instead available in FPYNOTSDHLTH.
To increase comparability and provide a comprehensive category, IPUMS-DHS both includes FPYNOTHLTH and FPYNOTSIDEF as separate variables and consolidates the two variables in FPYNOTSDHLTH for applicable samples. This ensures that samples recoded to Phases IV-V ("Health concerns" and "Fear of side effects") are also comparable to samples recoded to Phase VI ("Health concerns/Fear of side effects").
Comparability — India [top]
Women who have never had sex are excluded from FPYNOTHLTH for the 2005 India sample. This exclusion was made during the DHS processing and was not due to supplemental programming from IPUMS-DHS.
Comparability — Malawi [top]
For Malawi 2004, IPUMS-DHS used supplemental programming to exclude women who have never had sex from FPYNOTHLTH. Therefore, women at risk of pregnancy include women who were not infecund, sterilized, or pregnant, and who have had sex.

For Tanzania 2010, IPUMS-DHS used supplemental programming to exclude women who have never had sex from FPYNOTHLTH. Therefore, women at risk of pregnancy include women who were not infecund, sterilized, or pregnant, and who have had sex.
