Description

FPYNOTUSMAIN (V607) reports the main reason why the woman is not currently using a method of family planning.

Comparability

In addition to slight universe differences, FPYNOTUSMAIN's (V607) response options vary across samples. To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding to group similar rationales with a common first digit. Thus, for example, reasons related to "infrequent sex" share a first digit of 2, while the second digit provides additional detail (e.g., with code 22 for "infrequent sex" and code 23 for "husband absent").

IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Codes tab for samples of interest.

Comparability - Standard DHS

FPYNOTUSMAIN (V607) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase I. IPUMS-DHS users interested in this variable may also be interested in the "FPYNOT" series, a collection of "Yes/No" variables that indicate whether the woman is not using family planning for a particular reason (e.g., not using because of health concerns).
