Description

GEO_EG1988_2014 indicates the region of Egypt where the respondent was interviewed. The variable is integrated to yield units with consistent boundaries across samples.

Labels identify the modern geographic units (grouped governorates) contained in each integrated region. Each sample also has its own non-integrated geography variable. An additional integrated variable, GEOALT_EG1988_2014, contains greater geographic detail (governorates).

Comparability

Egypt included 5 grouped governorates in the 1988 and 1992 surveys:

  • Rural and Urban Lower Egypt, comprised of Behera, Dakahlia, Damietta, Gharbia, Ismailia, Kafr-El Sheikh, Kayubia, Menoufia and Sharkia.
  • Rural and Urban Upper Egypt, comprised of Assiut, Aswan, Beni Suef , Fayoum , Giza, Menya, Souhag, Qena, and Luxor (created from Qena in 2014 sample).
  • Urban Governorates, comprised of Alexandria, Cairo, Port Said, and Suez.

Starting with the 1995 sample, Frontier was added as a group of governorates and included Matroh, New Valley, Red Sea, North Sinai, and South Sinai. The 2014 sample excludes the North and South Sinai governorates.
