Description

GEO_NP1996_2016 reports the subregion in Nepal where the respondent was interviewed, using as units five development regions with consistent boundaries across samples.

Other integrated geographic variables for Nepal also provide spatially consistent units over time. GEOALT_NP1996_2016 covers the same time period as GEO_NP1996_2016, using ecological regions as the unit. GEO_NP1996_2011 provides spatially consistent units over time through the 2011 Nepalese survey, using a combination of development regions and ecological regions. Each Nepalese sample also has its own sample-specific geography variable.

An integrated GIS map (in shapefile format) for Nepal, using the units and boundaries in GEO_NP1996_2016, can be downloaded here.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences, GEO_NP1996_2016 is comparable across samples.

In 2015, the administrative divisions of Nepal were reorganized into seven provinces with different boundaries than earlier first-level administrative units (development regions) had. The integrated variable GEO_NP1996_2016 uses development regions for consistency across time, even though these units were no longer the first-level administrative unit for Nepal by the time of the 2016 Nepalese sample.
