GEO_ RW1992_2005 indicates the region of Rwanda where the respondent was interviewed. The variable is integrated to yield units with consistent boundaries across samples.

Labels identify the modern geographic units (groups of prefectures) contained in each integrated region. Each sample also has its own non-integrated geography variable. The 2000 and 2005 Rwanda samples have greater geographic detail available in their sample-specific variables. An additional geographic variable, GEO_RW2005_2014, includes the 2005, 2010 and 2014 Rwanda samples and contains different geographic units (provinces).

An integrated GIS map (in shapefile format) for Rwanda can be downloaded here.

The 1992 Rwanda sample groups the prefectures as follows:

  • Gisenyi, Kibuye, and Ruhengeri are grouped into Northwest
  • Cyangugu and Gikongoro are grouped into Southwest
  • Butare and Gitarama are grouped into Central and South
  • Byumba, Kibongo, and Umutara are grouped into Northeast
  • Boundaries of the Kigali prefecture remained autonomous

In 2002, the prefectures changed to provinces. The 2005 sample includes both prefectures (V101) and provinces as geographic units (see GEOALT_RW2005). The Rwanda 2010 and 2014 samples are excluded from GEO_RW1992_2005 due to inconsistent boundaries.
