Description

GEO_ZA1998_2016 reports the region of South Africa where the respondent was interviewed. The regions represent grouped provinces with consistent boundaries across time.

Labels identify the modern geographic units (provinces) contained in each integrated region. Each sample also has its own non-integrated geography variable. Although names of most units remained the same, their boundaries changed through time. Each South Africa sample also has its own sample-specific geography variable.

Comparability

  • The name of Northern Province changed to Limpopo in 2003
  • The Limpopo territory was reduced on the Eastern side and added to the Mpumalanga province
