HCFLS1 indicates whether the woman reported a CHAL [Christian Health Association of Lesotho] hospital as a source for female condoms. This response category is country-specific to Lesotho.

Some samples in the "HCF" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCFLS1 is combined with HCFLS2 (CHAL health center) and HCFLS3 (CHAL health post) in HCFPRIVMIS (all faith-based health facilities) for the 2014 Lesotho sample. Additionally, HCFLS1 is combined with HCFLS2 in HCFPRIVMIS for the 2004 and 2009 Lesotho samples. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCFLS1 are encouraged to review HCFPRIVMIS for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on known sources for female condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases IV forward.

Although HCFLS1 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCFPRIVMIS, a variable that encompasses all faith-based health facilities as sources of female condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCFLS1 or the Comparability tab of HCFPRIVMIS for more information on the specific categories combined for the Lesotho samples.
