Description

HCHHANYTRANSTIME reports how many minutes it would take to travel from the dwelling to the nearest health facility. For some but not all samples, this question assumes the household member is using the mode of transport specified in HCARETRANSPORT.

Comparability — Index

Comparability

Along with universe differences, HCHHANYTRANSTIME differs across samples in question wording--notably whether the respondent specified the mode of transportation prior to reporting transport time. In addition, the information in this variable was sometimes collected from the household respondent and sometimes collected as part of the women’s survey. See Comparability – Standard DHS.

Comparability - Standard DHS

Prior to DHS Phase 8, HCHHANYTRANSTIME is a country-specific variable not included in the standard DHS household questionnaire. Prior to Phase 8, this information in this variable is taken from the household record and applies to regular household residents, not temporary visitors. Researchers may wish to exclude visitors using the RESIDENT variable (with visitors coded "2") when women, children, or births are the unit of analysis, and using the HHRESIDENT variable when household members are the unit of analysis.

Beginning in DHS Phase 8, the information in this variable is collected during the women’s survey, and the source variable has the standard name V483A.

Comparability — Congo (Democratic Republic) [top]

Unlike most other surveys, the 2007 Congo Democratic Republic survey did not link this question to a prior query about the mode of transport a household member would use to reach the closest health family. Thus, two respondents might report the same travel time (say, 30 minutes) but be very different in their closeness to a health facility, if one assumed transport on foot while the other assumed transport by car.

Comparability — Nepal [top]

The 2016 Nepal survey did not link this question to any prior query about a mode of transport to reach the closest health facility. Thus, two respondents might report the same travel time (say, 30 minutes) but be very different in their closeness to a health facility, if one assumed transport on foot while the other assumed transport by car.

The 2016 Nepal survey specified the nearest government health facility.
