Description

HCMDK (V762AZ) indicates whether the woman did not know a source to obtain male condoms.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, HCMDK (V762AZ) has some variation in question wording that broadly applies to the "source for male condom" series.

The standard questionnaire asks, "Do you know of a place where a person can get condoms?" with gender not specified, and the following question asking where a person can get female condoms (implying that "condoms," broadly, are male condoms). Many surveys specifically ask, "Do you know of a place where a person can get male condoms?" (emphasis ours), especially when there is not a follow-up question about female condoms. Some surveys, listed below, simply ask about condoms, but do not have a follow-up question about female condoms.

Comparability - Standard DHS

HCMDK (V762AZ) first appears in phase IV of the Standard DHS questionnaire, as "Do you know of a place where you can get condoms?" In Phase V, the wording changes to "Do you know of a place where a person can get condoms?" All the respondent's responses were recorded. This variable is included and consistent in all subsequent phases of the standard DHS questionnaire.

A question on whether the woman knows of a source for male condoms is included in Phase III, but only the woman's first response was recorded. Phase III samples are included with samples from Phase IV forward in the "source for male condom" series, but IPUMS-DHS users should be careful when comparing these samples due to the different means of recording responses across phases.
