Description

HCMET12 indicates whether the woman reported a "private clinic" as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Ethiopia.

Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCMET12 is combined with HCMET13 (private hospital) in HCMPRIVHOS (private hospitals and clinics) for the 2011 Ethiopia sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMET12 are encouraged to review HCMPRIVHOS for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

HCMET12 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.

Though HCMET12 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPRIVHOS, a variable that encompasses private hospitals and clinics as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMET12 or the Comparability tab of HCMPRIVHOS for more information on the specific categories combined for Ethiopia 2011.
