Codes and Frequencies
HCMMG8 indicates whether the woman reported a relative as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Madagascar.
Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
HCMMG8 is combined with HCMMG7 (friends) in HCMFRND (friends, relatives, and acquaintances) for the 1997 Madagascar sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMMG8 are encouraged to review HCMFRND for a more comprehensive response category.
HCMMG8 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.
Though HCMMG8 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMFRND, a variable that encompasses friends, relatives, and acquaintances as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMMG8 or the Comparability tab of HCMFRND for more information on the specific categories combined for Madagascar 1997.
- Madagascar 1997: Women age 15-49 who have ever had sexual intercourse and who know of a source for male condoms.
