Codes and Frequencies
HCMMW9 indicates whether the woman reported a "mission door-to-door" as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Malawi.
Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
HCMMW9 is combined with HCMMW1 (mission hospital), HCMMW2 (mission health center), and HCMMW3 (mission mobile clinic) in HCMPRIVMIS (all faith-based facilities) for the 2010 Malawi sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMMW9 are encouraged to review HCMPRIVMIS for a more comprehensive response category.
HCMMW9 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.
Though HCMMW9 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPRIVMIS, a variable that encompasses all faith-based facilities as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMMW9 or the Comparability tab of HCMPRIVMIS for more information on the specific categories combined for Malawi 2010.
