HCMSRCMN (HCMSRCMN)
Known source for condoms reported by man

Codes

This variable is not available for any of the currently selected samples.

Description

HCMSRCMN reports where the male respondent knows condoms can be obtained. Response categories vary across samples. See Comparability.

Note that gathering into a single variable all responses to a question about the known source for male condoms was the practice for some DHS samples in the 1990s. However, many other samples, including those taken after 2000, created a separate variable for each reported source for male condoms.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, the response categories for HCMSRCMN vary across samples.

The harmonized coding categories in the IPUMS-DHS variable HCMSRCMN were constructed to reflect the major and minor categories in the original DHS variable. The major categories are:

  • 1000: Public sector facilities
  • 2000: Private medical sector facilities
  • 3000: Non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
  • 4000: Religious/mission facilities
  • 5000: Other

The second, third, and fourth digits of HCMSRCMN's codes distinguish between specific locations and provide detail present in only some samples.

Comparability - Standard DHS

HCMSRCMN (MV762) is included in Phase III of the standard DHS questionnaire.
