Description

HCMTG5 indicates whether the woman reported a public infirmary/dispensary as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Togo.

Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCMTG5 (public dispensary/infirmary) is combined with HCMTG4 (public pharmacy) in HCMPUBDRUG (all public pharmacies and dispensaries) for the 1998 Togo sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMTG5 are encouraged to review HCMPUBDRUG for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

HCMTG5 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.

Although HCMTG5 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPUBDRUG, a variable that encompasses all public pharmacies and dispensaries as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMTG5 or the Comparability tab of HCMPUBDRUG for more information on the specific categories combined for Togo 1998.
