Description

HCRW1 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the woman reported she has sought medical help at a public referral hospital. This variable is country-specific to Rwanda.

Some samples in the "HC" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCRW1 is combined with HCRW2 (public provincial/district hospital) in HCPUBHOS (all public hospitals) for the 2014 Rwanda sample. IPUMS DHS users interested in using HCRW1 are encouraged to reviewer HCPUBHOS for a more comprehensive response category.
