Description

HCZA5 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the woman reported seeking medical help from a faith healer. This variable is country-specific to South Africa.

Some samples in the "HC" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCZA5 is combined with HCZA3 (traditional healer) and HCZA4 (traditional herbalist) in HCPRIVHL (all traditional practitioners/healers) for the 2016 South Africa sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCZA5 are encouraged to reviewer HCPRIVHL for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

HCZA5 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

HCZA5 is a country-specific variable, and it is not included in any phase of the standard DHS questionnaire.
