Description

HEATFUEL reports the type of fuel the household uses for heating.

The information in HEATFUEL is taken from the household record and applies to regular household residents, not temporary visitors. Researchers may wish to exclude visitors (coded "2") using:

RESIDENT variable when women, children, or births are the unit of analysis
HHRESIDENT variable when household members are the unit of analysis
RESIDENTMN variable when men are the unit of analysis.

Comparability

For HEATFUEL, IPUMS-DHS uses, for the most part, the same composite codes used in the standard variable COOKFUEL (HV226), for type of fuel used for cooking.

The first digit of HEATFUEL distinguishes between broad categories of fuel: electricity, petroleum-based, biogas, coal-based, wood- or grass-based, dung-based, and other. The second and third digits provide additional detail and distinguish between responses within categories (e.g., code "100" for "Electricity-based," code "101" for "Electricity from mains").

Comparability - Standard DHS

HEATFUEL is a country-specific variable not included in the standard DHS household questionnaire.
