Description

HIVCONSENT (V473A) indicates whether permission was granted for the person's blood to be drawn and tested for HIV antibodies or, if not, why not. Interviewers read a statement about HIV testing and requested permission to draw and test the individual's blood; blood was drawn only if consent was given by the persons themselves (if adults) or by a parent or guardian (if a minor).

Comparability

Along with universe differences, HIVCONSENT (V473A) differs in the detail of responses about why permission was not granted for a blood draw and testing. To maximize comparability across samples, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding, with all "no" answers sharing a first digit of "2" and the reason identified in the second digit.

Comparability - Standard DHS

HIVCONSENT (V473A) is a standard recode variable in the DHS beginning in Phase V.
