Comparability

Along with universe differences and slight differences in question wording, IDEALEDSON differs in the number of response categories across samples. To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding, with responses covering some schooling but less than secondary school sharing a first digit of "1," at least some secondary education sharing a first digit of "2," and "more than secondary" sharing a first digit of "3." Additional detail is preserved in the second digit (e.g., code 13 for "able to read and write").
