Description

KIDRESTYP (V103) reports the type of place--city, town, countryside, or somewhere abroad--where the woman lived for most of her childhood (usually defined as prior to age 12). Due to country- and survey-level variation in data collection, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding to maximize comparability across samples for this variable.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, KIDRESTYP (V103) has some significant variation across countries and surveys in question wording. Many surveys mention the names of large cities in the country by name and distinguish between the capital and other cities; others use a single "city" response category. To maximize comparability across samples without loss of detail, IPUMS-DHS uses 2-digit composite coding, where the leading digit indicates larger groupings (city, town, countryside, abroad) while the second digit provides additional detail.

Some samples distinguish between "village" and "countryside" in the survey text, but these responses were grouped into one category in DHS data processing.
