MARREL indicates the kinship relationship (paternal cousin, maternal cousin, other type of relative, or no relationship) the respondent had to her first husband.

Along with universe differences, the responses categories for MARREL vary across samples. To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS uses a composite coding system in which broad categories share a common first digit. The meaning of "other" in a given sample depends on the categories specified for that survey. For the question wording and response categories appearing on the questionnaire for surveys of interest, consult the Survey Text tab.
