Description

MENSPRIVATE indicates whether the respondent was able to change (and wash) in private while she was at home during her last menstrual period.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, MENSPRIVATE differs across samples in codes and question wording. Some samples included a question about being able to change in private; others had a question referring to changing and washing in private. The standard version of this variable in DHS Phase 8 includes an additional code 2 for being away from home during the last period.

Prior to DHS Phase 8, MENSPRIVATE is a country-specific variable not included in any phase of the standard DHS questionnaire. In Phase 8, this variable has the standard name V248.
