Description

ORSPRIVDRUG (V424K) indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the woman reported a private pharmacy, drug store, or dispensary as a source for oral rehydration solution (ORS).

ORS is a typically used to treat dehydration in individuals with diarrhea.

Some samples in the "ORS" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

For example, a given sample might include multiple categories for different types of private, formal drug vendors that could be combined to create a more comprehensive response category. See Comparability for more information on the specific categories combined in ORSPUBHC.

Comparability

In addition to slight universe differences, ORSPRIVDRUG (V424K) varies slightly in question wording across samples. This response category is consistently organized under the "Private Sector" header and is usually worded as "pharmacy." However, some samples diverge from this standard and word this response category as "dispensary." In other cases, multiple categories were consolidated in ORSPRIVDRUG to form a single, more comprehensive response. Countries of particular interest are noted below.

Additionally, there is some variation in the terminology used to refer to ORS, as some samples used local brand names. Samples of particular interest are noted below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

ORSPRIVDRUG (V424K) is included in Phase II of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Comparability — Cameroon [top]

In the Cameroon 1991 survey, this question asks where the woman can obtain an "ORS packet/UNICEF packet/salt packet."

Comparability — Ghana [top]

In the Ghana 1993 survey, this question asks where the woman can obtain an ORS or Phermerol packet.

In the 1992 Niger sample, there are separate categories for "private pharmacy," "private dispensary," and "private pharmaceutic depot." Because this variable focuses on all private, formal drug vendors, these responses are consolidated in ORSPRIVDRUG to create a more comprehensive response category. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific categories:

  • Pharmacy is listed as ORSNE1 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Dispensary is listed as ORSNE2 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Pharmaceutic depot is listed as ORSNE3 in IPUMS-DHS

Comparability — Zambia [top]

In the Zambia 1992 survey, this question asks where the woman can obtain a "Madzi a Moyo" packet.
