Description

For women who had a pregnancy end without a live birth (through abortion, stillbirth or miscarriage) (usually in the 5 years before the survey), PREGTERMPREV (V234) indicates whether the woman had any other pregnancies that ended without a live birth.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences and slight variation in question wording, PREGTERMPREV (V234) is comparable across most samples. Samples with comparability issues are noted below.

Note that, for most samples, the universe is restricted to women who had a pregnancy termination in the last 5 years, but for a few samples, the universe is women who had a pregnancy termination at any time. Users should check the Universe tab to identify samples in the latter group.

Comparability - Standard DHS

PREGTERMPREV (V234) is included in Phase II forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

In Phase II, the standard questionnaire asks, "Did you ever have any other such pregnancies?" In Phases III and IV, the standard questionnaire asks, "Have you ever had any other pregnancies which did not result in a live birth?"

In Phase V forward, the standard questionnaire asks, "Since January 20XX [5 years before survey] [emphasis added], have you had any other pregnancies that did not result in a live birth?"

Comparability — Zambia [top]

The Zambia 2001 survey asks for the months the woman was pregnant for any pregnancy termination, including termination of pregnancies that happened before 1996. Users can constrain this timeline to make the data comparable with the DHS standard by using PREGTERMINYR (V230) and recoding pregnancy terminations that took place before 1996 as 99/NIU (not in universe) in PREGTERMTIM.

Other Zambia surveys do not share Zambia 2001's comparability issue.
