RESIDENT (V135) indicates whether the woman was a usual resident of the household or was just visiting there. As defined by the RESIDENT variable, a visitor could potentially reside in the city, town, or village where the interview took place but would have answered "No" to the question, "Does (NAME) usually live here [in this dwelling unit]?" on the household questionnaire.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences, RESIDENT (V135) is largely comparable across most surveys. While the majority of surveys included two questions under the "Residence" heading in the household questionnaire, some surveys included only one of these questions.

Most surveys asked both "Does (NAME) usually live here?" and another question about whether the person was present in the dwelling during the previous night. The wording of the second question varied across surveys, as "Was (NAME) present last night?" or "Did (NAME) sleep here last night?" or "Did (NAME) stay here last night?"

Only those countries with additional comparability issues for this variable are discussed below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

The question "Does (NAME) usually live here?" is included and consistent across all phases of the standard DHS questionnaire. The second question was asked as "Did (NAME) sleep here last night?" in the Phase 1 standard questionnaire, and for Phase 2 forward was asked as "Did (NAME) stay here last night?"
