Description

SEXBRSTFD (V609) indicates whether the woman thinks mothers should wait until they have stopped breastfeeding before resuming sexual relations after the birth of a child.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences across phases (see below), SEXBRSTFD (V609) is largely comparable across samples. Most commonly, the question was worded as "Should a mother wait until she has completely stopped breastfeeding before starting to have sexual relations again, or doesn't it matter?" or some slight variation. In addition to the standard response options of "Wait" and "Doesn't matter," some surveys also included a "Don't know" option.

Comparability - Standard DHS

SEXBRSTFD (V609) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phases I and II. In Phase I samples, only women who were currently married were included, while in Phase II, the base universe expanded to include all interviewed women.
