Description

For women who had symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past 12 months, STIADBD11 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported seeking advice or treatment from a NGO satellite clinic for this problem. This response category is country-specific to Bangladesh.

Some samples in the "STIAD" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

STIADBD11 is combined with STIADBD10 (NGO static clinic), STIADBD12 (NGO fieldworker), STIADBD13 (NGO depot holder), and STIADBD14 (Other NGO) in STIADNGO (all NGOs) for the 2011 Bangladesh sample. Additionally, STIADBD11 is combined with STIADBD10 and STIADBD12 in STIADNGO for the 2014 Bangladesh sample.

IPUMS-DHS users interested in using STIADBD11 are encouraged to review STIADNGO for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

Apart from slight universe differences, STIADBD11 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about where the woman received advice/treatment for an STI is included in Phases III, V and VI forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Although STIADBD11 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in STIADNGO, a standard variable that encompasses all NGOs as sources for STI advice/treatment. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of STIADBD11 or the Comparability tab of STIADNGO for more information on the specific categories combined for the Bangladesh samples.
