Description

For women who had symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past 12 months, STIADBD4 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported seeking advice or treatment from a public maternal and child welfare center for this problem. This response category is country-specific to Bangladesh.

Some samples in the "STIAD" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

STIADBD4 is combined with STIADBD5 (public health and family welfare center) in STIADPUBHC (all public health centers) for the 2011 and 2014 Bangladesh samples. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using STIADBD4 are encouraged to review STIADPUBHC for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

Apart from slight universe differences, STIADBD4 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about where the woman received advice/treatment for an STI is included in Phases III, V and VI forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Although STIADBD4 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in STIADPUBHC, a standard variable that encompasses all public health centers as sources for STI advice/treatment. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of STIADBD4 or the Comparability tab of STIADPUBHC for more information on the specific categories combined for the Bangladesh samples.
