Description

For women who had symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past 12 months, STIADMW3 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported seeking advice or treatment from a public "door to door" for this problem. This response category is country-specific to Malawi.

Some samples in the "STIAD" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

STIADMW3 is combined with STIADMW4 (public health surveillance assistant (HSA)) in STIADPUBFW (all public field workers) for the 2010 Malawi sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using STIADMW3 are encouraged to review STIADPUBFW for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

STIADMW3 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about where the woman received advice/treatment for an STI is included in Phases III, V and VI forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Though STIADMW3 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in STIADPUBFW, a standard variable that encompasses all public fieldworkers as sources for STI advice/treatment. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of STIADMW3 or the Comparability tab of STIADPUBFW for more information on the specific categories combined for the Malawi samples.
