Description

For women who had symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past 12 months, STIADRW3 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported seeking advice or treatment from a private clinic for this problem. This response category is country-specific to Rwanda.

Some samples in the "STIAD" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

STIADRW3 is combined with STIADRW5 (private doctor) in STIADPRIVHOS (private hospital, clinic, or doctor) for the 2005 Rwanda sample. Additionally, STIADRW3 is combined with STIADRW4 (private polyclinic) in STIADPRIVHOS for the 2010 and 2014 Rwanda samples.

IPUMS-DHS users interested in using STIADRW3 are encouraged to review STIADPRIVHOS for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

STIADRW3 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about where the woman received advice/treatment for an STI is included in Phases III, V and VI forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Though STIADRW3 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in STIADPRIVHOS, a standard variable that encompasses private hospitals, clinics, and doctors as sources for STI advice/treatment. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of STIADRW3 or the Comparability tab of STIADPRIVHOS for more information on the specific categories combined for the Rwanda samples.
