Description

For women who had symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past 12 months, STIADZA1 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported seeking advice or treatment from a traditional herbalist for this problem. This response category is country-specific to South Africa.

Some samples in the "STIAD" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

STIADZA1 is combined with STIADZA2 (traditional healer) in STIADPRIVHL (all traditional healers/herbalists) for the 2016 South Africa sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using STIADZA1 are encouraged to review STIADPRIVHL for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

STIADZA1 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about where the woman received advice/treatment for an STI is included in Phases III, V and VI forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Although STIADZA1 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in STIADPRIVHL, a standard variable that encompasses all traditional healers and herbalists as sources for STI advice/treatment. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of STIADZA1 or the Comparability tab of STIADPRIVHL for more information on the specific categories combined for South Africa 2016.
