Description

STOCKINHOME indicates whether the household keeps farm animals (livestock or poultry) inside the family's dwelling space.

The information in STOCKINHOME is taken from the household record and applies to regular household residents, not temporary visitors. Researchers may wish to exclude visitors using the RESIDENT variable (with visitors coded "2") when women, children, or births are the unit of analysis, and using the HHRESIDENT variable when household members are the unit of analysis.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, STOCKINHOME varies question wording and in the degree of detail of responses. Some samples provide a dichotomous yes/no response; others specify when the farm animals can go inside the family's dwelling. To maximize comparability, all "yes" responses share a first digit of "2," while additional detail is preserved in a second digit (e.g., "yes, day and night" is coded "22").

Most commonly, surveys asked, "Where do you usually keep the animals at night?" Exceptions to this wording are noted below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

STOCKINHOME is a country-specific variable not included in the standard DHS household questionnaire.

Comparability — Uganda [top]

The 2016 Ugandan survey asks, "Are there any animals that sleep in the house where people sleep?"
