Along with slight differences in question wording, there are significant response category differences in SXPAR1REL (V767A), which may impact its comparability.
Most of the differences across samples are in accordance with changes in the standard DHS questionnaire, which are addressed below. Countries with additional comparability issues for this variable are discussed below. Researchers are advised to consult the codes page to see the response categories used in a particular sample.
To maximize comparability across samples, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding for SXPAR1REL. For example, the categories "spouse" and "cohabiting partner" are sometimes reported separately and sometimes combined, but all these responses share a common first digit of 1.
Comparability - Standard DHS
SXPAR1REL (V767A) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase IV forward. Question wording and response categories change across phases.
In Phases V and VI, the question wording changes to include any sex partner, eliminating the specificity of male sex partners.
In addition to wording differences, the response categories are modified significantly in Phase V forward. The response category "spouse/cohabiting partner" from Phase IV is separated into two separate responses ("husband" and "live-in partner") in the later phases. Some responses from Phase IV, including "man is boyfriend/fiancé," "other friend," and "relative," are excluded from later phases; the response "boyfriend not living with respondent" is added to Phases V forward. The "commercial sex worker" category from Phase IV changes to "prostitute" in Phase V and to "client/prostitute" in Phase VI.
Comparability — Central African Republic [top]
The Central African Republic 1995 survey reports the answers only for women who are currently married or living with a partner. In addition, the response categories are modified significantly and include "husband," "man she lives with," and "someone else."
Comparability — Ethiopia [top]
The Ethiopia 2000 survey uses feminine response categories (e.g., girlfriend) centering on the woman's relationship to the man, rather than the man's relationship to the woman. The Ethiopia 2005 survey uses both girlfriend and boyfriend, and in the Ethiopia 2011 and 2016 surveys, the survey text uses the masculine language that the standard DHS uses (e.g., husband, boyfriend).
Comparability — Kenya [top]
The Kenya 1998 form provides two questions that allow the interviewer to modify the question wording based on the woman's marital status. In addition, the response categories are modified significantly and include: "husband/man lives with," "regular partner," "acquaintance," and "someone else."
