Comparability - Standard DHS

SXPARYRNO2 (V766A) first appears in phase IV of the Standard DHS with the wording "In total, with how many different men have you had sex in the last 12 months?" In phase V, the word "men" is changed to "people" and "sex" is changed to "sexual intercourse." SXPARYRNO is included and consistent in all subsequent phases of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Comparability — Niger [top]

In the 1998 Niger survey, there are two separate questions related to sex with someone other than a husband or partner. Women who are married or who live with man are asked, "During the last 12 months, with how many different people beside (your husband/the man with whom you live) did you have sexual intercourse?" Unmarried women who have had sex in the last 12 months are asked, "During the last 12 months, with how many different people did you have sexual intercourse?"

Because this variable focuses on the number of sex partners all women have had in the past 12 months, excluding their spouse, the responses to these two questions are consolidated in SXPARYRNO2 to create a more comprehensive variable. Researchers interested in separating the responses of married women and unmarried women can use CURRMARR (V502).
