TIMETOWTRHH (HV204)
Time to reach water source and return, in minutes (from HH record)

Codes

TIMETOWTRHH (HV204) is a 3-digit numeric variable.

360 = 360+
995 = On premises
996 = Non-resident
997 = Don't know
998 = Missing
999 = NIU (not in universe)

Description

TIMETOWTRHH (HV204) reports the time in minutes it takes members of the household to get to their main source of water and return to their dwelling. In IPUMS-DHS, this variable is top-coded at 360 minutes or more (6 hours or longer).

The information in TIMETOWTRHH is taken from the household record and applies to regular household residents, not temporary visitors. Researchers may wish to exclude visitors using the RESIDENT variable when women, children, or births are the unit of analysis, and using the HHRESIDENT variable when household members are the unit of analysis.

Comparability

Along with slight variation in question wording and universe differences, TIMETOWTRHH (HV204) differs slightly across phases. See Comparability - Standard DHS below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

TIMETOWTRHH (HV204) is a standard variable in DHS data for Phase II forward. In the standard Phase II questionnaires, TIMETOWTRHH (HV204) refers to the time it takes to get to the source of water used for household purposes, such as washing and cooking. In Phase III forward, TIMETOWTRHH refers to the time it takes to get to the source of drinking water.

Comparability — Bangladesh [top]

The 1994 Bangladesh survey asked "how long does it take to go there" [to get water used for dishwashing]. Waiting time to collect water is not included, but rather is asked about in a separate question. While many surveys explicitly ask how long it takes to get to water and return, the 1994 Bangladesh survey question may be perceived by some respondents as asking about only travel time to water, but not time to return (implying half the time that might be reported in other surveys).

The 2011 and 2014 Bangladesh surveys asked, "How long does it take to go there [to the source of drinking water], get water, and come back?" Users should be cautious about comparing results from the 1994 and 2011 Bangladesh surveys for this variable, due to the substantial change in question wording.

Comparability — Uganda [top]

The 2001 and 2006 Uganda surveys asked separately about time to reach the water source, time waiting for water, and time to return with water, but these time estimates were combined to make the standard variable TIMETOWTRHH (HV2014).
