Apart from universe differences and slight differences in question wording, TOSMOKE (V463A) has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
TOSMOKE (V463A) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire from Phase IV forward.
In Phase IV, the question wording is "Do you currently smoke cigarettes or tobacco?" with a follow-up question asking, "What type of tobacco do you smoke?" In Phases V and VI, the question wording is "Do you currently smoke cigarettes?" In Phase VII, the question wording changed to "Do you currently smoke cigarettes every day, some days, or not at all?"
Comparability — Egypt [top]
The 2000 Egyptian survey asks whether the respondent currently smokes cigarettes or tobacco.
Comparability — India [top]
The 1998 India survey asks whether the individual smokes (does not specify cigarettes), and the 2005 India survey asks whether the individual currently smokes "cigarettes or bidis."
The 2015 India survey asks separately whether the respondent currently smoke cigarettes (TOSMOKE) or bidis (TOBIDI).
Comparability — Nepal [top]
The 2001 Nepal survey includes "cigarettes/bidis" as a response category.
Comparability — South Africa [top]
The 2016 South Africa survey asks separately about the number of manufactured cigarettes and hand-rolled cigarettes the respondent smokes each day. These two responses were consolidated by The DHS Program into a single variable (V463A). Researchers interested in the responses to the original questions may find them in TOCIGINDDAY (number of manufactured cigarettes usually smoked each day) and TOHANDROLLDAY (number of hand-rolled cigarettes usually smoked each day).
