Apart from universe differences, TRBLEACH (HV237B) is comparable across most samples. Some surveys, noted below, include other chemical treatments, such as named commercial products, along with or instead of bleach or chlorine.

Comparability - Standard DHS

TRBLEACH (HV237B) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire from Phase V forward.

Comparability — Ethiopia [top]

While the 2005 Ethiopian survey asked about adding "bleach," the 2011 Ethiopian survey combined bleach with other possible chemical additives in the response category "add bleach/chlorine/water guard/pur/bishan gari/aquatabs."

Comparability — Malawi [top]

The 2010 Malawi survey includes "Add bleach/chlorine/Water Guard" as a response category. WaterGuard is a chlorine-based water treatment product.

Comparability — Zambia [top]

The 2001 Zambian survey first asked whether the respondent had heard of a commercial water treatment product (Clorin) and then asked those with an affirmative answer whether they currently used the product to purify their household's water. The 2007 and 2013 Zambian surveys simply included the commercial product Clorin along with bleach and chlorine in the standard response category.
