Comparability

Apart from universe differences and slight differences in question wording, TVWK (V110) is largely comparable across samples. While most surveys ask the woman, "Do you watch television at least once a week?" some surveys depart from this question format by asking for more detail or providing a range of possible responses other than "Yes/No." These surveys are noted below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

TVWK (V110) is included and consistent in the standard DHS questionnaire from Phase I through III. A similar question appears in Phase IV forward, where respondents were asked how often they watch television. The latter question is the basis for the variable TVFQ (V159).

Comparability — Tanzania [top]

The Tanzania 1999 survey asks, "Do you watch television almost every day, at least once a week, less than once a week, or not at all?"

Comparability — Uganda [top]

The Uganda 1995 survey asks, "How often do you watch television?" and provides multiple response categories.

Comparability — Yemen [top]

The 1991 Yemen survey asks, "Do you watch television?" A response of "yes" in this survey does not necessarily indicate the respondent watches television at least once a week.

Comparability — Zambia [top]

The Zambia 1996 survey asks, "How often do you usually watch television? Would you say every day, every other day, at least once a week, at least once a month, a few times a year, or never?"
