Description

URBAN_GH is a simplified dichotomous variable that reports if the sampled household was located in an urban or rural area.
This variable is consistently coded across the IPUMS Global Health projects from the project specific variables:

IPUMS DHS: URBANHH
IPUMS MICS: URBAN
IPUMS PMA: URBAN

Comparability

Countries have different definitions of urban areas. In this variable, we have harmonized the variables as defined by the survey program. See the comparability sections and universe tab for each data collection in IPUMS Global Health for more information about country specific comparability issues.
For IPUMS MICS, we have made the following choices.

Peri-urban, slums or informal settlements, and refugee camps were categorized as "urban".
Tribal and nomadic areas were categorized as "rural".

The original harmonization that maintains these distinct categories can be found in the IPUMS MICS variable URBAN.
