Description

RELIGION (V130) reports the respondent's religion. While the categories and codes for the religion variable in the original DHS files are country-specific, IPUMS-DHS uses a 4-digit composite coding system to fit these diverse categories into a single variable without losing information.  See Comparability.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, the response categories for RELIGION vary across samples.

The harmonized coding categories in the IPUMS-DHS variable RELIGION were constructed to reflect the major and minor categories in the original DHS variables (V130). The major categories are:

  • 0: No religion
  • 1000: Muslim
  • 2000: Christina
  • 3000: Buddhist/neo-Buddhist
  • 4000: Hindu
  • 5000: Jewish
  • 6000: Traditional/spiritual/animist
  • 7000: Other (specified)
  • 9000: Other


The second, third, and fourth digits of RELIGION's codes distinguish between specific religions and denominations and provide detail present in only some samples.

Only countries with additional comparability issues for this variable are discussed below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

Although there are no standard response categories, RELIGION (V130) is included in all phases of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Comparability — Congo Brazzaville [top]

The 2005 Republic of the Congo - Brazzaville survey combines the Adventist and Jehovah's Witness religions into a single response category.

Comparability — India [top]

While most surveys ask the woman about her own religion, the 1992 and 1998 India surveys ask about the religion of the head of the household (which is presumably generally the same as that of the woman).
