Description

For women who are currently married and whose husband or partner works in a non-agricultural occupation, WKHUSPAY (V706) indicates whether the partner earns a wage or salary.

Comparability

Along with universe differences and slight differences in question wording, WKHUSPAY (V706) varies across samples in the number of response categories. To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS gives a common first digit of "1" to the responses "earns no wage or salary" and "is self-employed," while the second digit distinguishes between these categories when both are available.

The 1989 Kenya survey first asks, "Does he work for someone else or for himself?" If the respondent reported her partner worked for someone else, she was then asked, "Does (did) he earn a regular wage or salary?"
