Description

For women who have ever been married, WKPOSTMAR (V711) indicates whether they have done any work since the date of their first marriage.

Comparability

In addition to universe differences and differences in question wording, WKPOSTMAR (V711) differs across samples in the number of response categories. Some samples ask only whether the respondent worked after marriage, while others ask how long she worked after marriage.

To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding, where "Yes" has a first digit of "1." The second digit provides more detail about how long the respondent remained in school, when this additional information is available.

The 1988 Egypt survey asks, "Since you were first married, have you ever done any work for cash?"

Comparability — Pakistan [top]

The 1991 Pakistan survey asks, "Did you work just [emphasis added] after you (first) got married?" The 2006, 2012, and 2017 Pakistan surveys ask the more standard, "Did you work after you (first) got married?"

The 1991 Yemen survey asks, "Since you were first married, have you done any work for cash?"
