Description
GEO_BR1986_1996 indicates the region of Brazil where the respondent was interviewed. DHS units in GEO_BR1986_1996 are equivalent to groups of states.
Each sample also has its own sample specific geography variable. An integrated GIS map (in shapefile format) for Bolivia can be downloaded here.
Comparability
- For the 1991 survey, only the region of Nordeste with all the states listed below were surveyed.
- For the 1996 survey, Norte and Centro Oeste were surveyed separately whereas for the 1986 survey Norte and Centro Oeste were combined.
The groups of states in Brazil are listed below.
- Rio de Janeiro
- Sao Paulo
- Sul: Parana, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul
- Centro-Leste: Minas Gerais, Espirito Santo, Distrito federal
- Nordeste: Maranhao, Piaui, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraiba, Ceara, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Pernambuco (all states included in the 1991 DHS survey only)
- Norte: Amazonas, Para
- Centro Oeste: Goias, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso
