Description

GEO_ID1991_2017 indicates the region of Indonesia where the respondent was interviewed. The variable is integrated to yield units with consistent boundaries across samples.

Labels identify the modern geographic units (provinces) contained in each integrated region. Each sample also has its own non-integrated geography variable. The variable GEO_ID1987_2017 reports three broad regions across the country.

Comparability

Indonesia had 27 provinces in 1994, which later split into 34:

  • Banten split from West Java
  • Banka Belitung split from South Sumatra
  • Gorontalo split from North Sulawesi
  • Riau Islands split from Riau
  • North Kalimantan split from East Kalimantan
  • North Maluku split from Maluku
  • West Papua split from Papua

The province of East Timor became independent from Indonesia in 1999 and is not included after the 1997 DHS survey.
