Description

GEO_ TZ1996_2015 reports the region of Tanzania where the respondent was interviewed. The variable is integrated to yield units with consistent boundaries across samples.

Labels identify the modern geographic units (regions) contained in each integrated region. Each sample also has its own non-integrated geography variable. The 2004, 2010, and 2015 samples have greater geographic detail available in their sample-specific variables. An additional integrated variable, GEO_TZ1991_2015, includes the 1991 Tanzania sample and has less geographic detail (zones).

Comparability

In 1996 and 1999, Tanzania had 22 regions that later split into 30 regions:

  • Manyara created from Arusha in 2002
  • Njombe was formed from part of Iringa in 2012.
  • Katavi was formed from part of Rukwa in 2012.
  • Geita was formed from parts of Shinyanga, Kagera, and Mwanza in 2012.
  • Simiyu was formed from parts of Shinyanga and Mwanza in 2012.
  • Pemba North created from Pemba
  • Pemba South created from Pemba
  • Town West created from Zanzibar
  • Zanzibar North created from Zanzibar
  • Zanzibar South created from Zanzibar

In the 1996 and 1999 Tanzania surveys, Pemba and Rest of Zanzibar (Unguja) comprise Zanzibar, and Pwani is identified as Coast.

The Tanzania 1991 sample is excluded from GEO_ TZ1996_2015 due to inconsistent boundaries.
