Description

MALARIA consists of a set of 20 separate variables, covering each year from 2000 to 2019. The variables report, by year, the mean clinical Plasmodium falciparium malaria cases (across all ages) per person within a 10-kilometer circular buffer around each DHS cluster location. Alternatively, this statistic can be summarized as the mean clinical plasmodium falciparum prevalence (PfPR), expressed as fractions of a case per person. MALARIA is available for a subset of the IPUMS-DHS samples with GPS data; see Comparability.

By adding MALARIA to your data cart, you are in effect adding 20 separate variables (MALARIA_2000 to MALARIA_2019), one variable for each year.

MALARIA, like the other IPUMS-DHS contextual variables, is calculated and based on sources external to the DHS data. For more information on IPUMS-DHS contextual variables and how they are constructed, refer to the documentation on these variables.

Comparability

MALARIA variables are comparable across samples, but these data are available for only the following IPUMS-DHS countries: Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cote d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Malaria data are available through the csv files on the contextual variables downloads page for the following countries: Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Gabon, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Togo.
