Description

PREVRESTYP (V105) reports the type of place--city, town, countryside, or a site abroad--where the person lived just before moving to the current place of residence.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, PREVRESTYP (V105) varies across samples in the degree of detail. IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding to maximize comparability, with the categories "city," "capital, large city," and "[other] city" sharing a common first digit of 1 while differing in the second digit of the code. Similarly, various responses falling into the "Town or countryside" rubric share a first digit of "2." The broad response category "Other" with a first digit of "3" and "Abroad" with a first digit of "4" includes detailed responses not present in all samples.

PREVRESTYP (V105) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phases I through V and in Phase VII. The Recode Manuals for Phase 2 forward note, "In some countries, additional codes are used for capital/major cities (code 0) and for abroad (code 4)."
