WKINCOME (V736)
Earnings for work

Codes

WKINCOME is an 8-digit numeric variable.

99999997 = Don't know
99999998 = Missing
99999999 = NIU (not in universe)

Description

For respondents who reported earning cash for their work, WKINCOME (V736) is an 8-digit numeric variable that reports the usual amount the respondent earns in cash.

The first digit gives the units in which the amount was specified, while the remaining 7 digits give the total amount. The first digit, or units digit, is coded as follows:

  • 1 indicates earnings per hour
  • 2 indicates earnings per day
  • 3 indicates earnings per week
  • 4 indicates earnings per month
  • 5 indicates earnings per year

For example, 30000400 would indicate that the respondent received 400 per week. The currency and units of currency used are both country-specific.

The values reported in WKINCOME are used to create two other variables with standard time units:

  • WKINCOMEDAY (V737) reports the respondent's approximate daily earnings
  • WKINCOMEYR (V738) reports the respondent's approximate yearly earnings

Comparability

In addition to slight differences in question wording, WKINCOME (V736) varies significantly in the units reported. The values reported in WKINCOME are not consistent across countries, as most countries have different currencies with different values. See country-specific comparability for more information.

Comparability - Standard DHS
