Description

HCMML3 indicates whether the woman reported a "reference health center" as a source for male condoms. This response category is country-specific to Mali.

Some samples in the "HCM" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCMML3 is combined with HCMML1 (community health center) in HCMPUBHC (public health centers and health posts) for the Mali samples. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCMML3 are encouraged to review HCMPUBHC for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences, HCMML3 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward.

Though HCMML3 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCMPUBHC, a variable that encompasses all public health centers and health posts as sources of male condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCMML3 or the Comparability tab of HCMPUBHC for more information on the specific categories combined for the Mali samples.
